25. Rebel

FLYNN SHUFFLES AROUND, his body facing me but his gaze focused on the candle as though reading something in the flame. He runs his fingers through his hair.

I reach for his hand. I want him to know that nothing he will say can change the way I feel about him.

Finally, he starts.

“Many years ago, a family lived in the area. The Charbonneau family. Business rivals of ours. Well, they started out as rivals but we began to notice odd things about them. They never went out during the day and they had agents to handle all their business. The entire family had piercing green eyes.”

I jolted. Of course the intense color of Flynn’s eyes had seemed unnatural but... what? They changed eye color when they turned? I don’t want to interrupt him so I file all questions away for later.

“They had a son a few years older than us and a daughter between our ages.” Flynn continues.

“Estella.” Bennet spits out the name as though it’s bitter poison.

“Estella,” Flynn repeats. “The most beautiful girl in town.”

My chest tightens until I notice his sneer. He hates her. He hates her with an intensity that scares me.

“Not much of a boast in a town like this one, even back then.” Bennet sneers. “But she had suitors from all over the state. Including your boy here.”

“Both of us. We fought and we let her come between us. A stupid thing.” Flynn studies his hands. “We were bewitched. We didn’t realize she had a hole in her chest instead of a heart.”

“She lured me first,” Bennet said. “A walk through the woods on a summer’s night. A kiss. A dalliance. Oh, those times were troublesome, having to navigate layers of skirt and petticoat to get to the good stuff.”

“She turned you?” I ask, as much to avoid hearing the sordid details of Bennet’s love life as to find out the answer.

Estella wasn’t some girl from the olden days, then. She’s a vampire too. A beautiful, twisted vampire. I can’t compete with someone like that. How could Flynn even look at me? I imagine her with raven hair and creamy skin. Huge bright eyes and full lips. A woman who drifts in flowing dresses, not a crazy tomboy child in shorts with legs full of scratches.

“She sired me. I became a thing of darkness, a creature of the night. Whatever you wish to call it.” For the first time, the coldness leaves his eyes but a frenzied glow replaces it. “Oh, those were glorious days. Freshly turned and without an ounce of humanity, I fed with abandon. A veritable orgy of blood. They called it a plague, unwilling to acknowledge the truth. Then it all came to an end.”

“I captured him,” Flynn says. “In daylight when he was weakest. Our father chained him in the basement. At first, he wanted to kill Bennet but I begged him not to. I said we could cure him. There had to be some way we could let him live.
